Follow the gentle banks of the Lethe on its journey from the wilderness into the dark, dank depths of Gehennom where it eventually flows into the bottomless Gulf of N'Kai. But be careful not to fall in, for the Lethe is the river of oblivion and it will sweep away your memories as easily as it sweeps away leaves and twigs. On the Lethe's banks there are many things to be found. An ancient fortress, a wizards manse, the Gates of Hades, and the lairs of several powerful demons. It is rumoured that even the fabled Wizard of Yendor has a entrance to his secret abode somewhere along the banks of the mighty river. Tales also tell of strange monsters, never seen before, that lurk along its banks. The deep ones, who live in the cold darkness beneath the waves and will seek to drag you under. Strange bat like beings who have flown down from the stars, thier wings crusted with ice from. Hideous invisible vampires that will suck the flesh from your bones and the terrible shuggoths who lie locked within the eternal darkness of the Gulf of N'Kai. Mere whispers and phrases scribbled by madmen speak of the unnamable horrors that await within Molochs Sanctum and of the abominations perpatrated by his high priest. |

This is the Lethe Patch for Nethack 3.3.1. It adds the fabled river Lethe flowing from just past the Medusa level down into the depth of Gehennom. It features some special river levels, along with expanded demon lairs and the eternally dark Gulf of N'Kai at the bottom of Gehennom. A number of nasty and devious monsters from the Cthulhu Mythos are added - deep ones, byakhee, nightgaunts, and terrible shuggoths, among others. There are several new features - some helpful, some YASDs just waiting to happen. The patch is intended to make the middle part of the game more interesting and more challanging. The entrance to the Lethe Gorge is located just past the medusa level, and the river then flows to the gates of hades and the valley of the dead before reappearing on a number of special levels within Gehennom and the Gulf of N'Kai. Beyond the gulf lies Molochs sanctum, wherein his highest priest has custody of the fabled Amulet of Yendor. |

The latest version of the Lethe patch is 1.2.01. You can download it here: lethe-1.2.01.zip You will need to be able to apply it to a copy of the Nethack 3.3.1 source (available from www.nethack.org) and compile it. An MS-DOS executable is also available for download: nh-lethe-1.2.01.zip |
